  1. John Mearshiemer is full of crap, and seems to think Russia should be allowed to just do whatever they want. The notion that NATO "provoked" this war is complete bullshit. If NATO didn't exist then Putin's first step would've been invade the Baltic states, and then to proceed with this invasion of Ukraine. Putin's anti-NATO stance was rejected by the West because the West isn't going to be bossed around by a 3rd-world dictator. Also, if a bear comes at me aggressively, I don't poke it in the eye. I shoot it.

  2. Russia was not in any way "goaded" into this invasion. It's Russia and Russia alone that violated the UN Charter by attacking Ukraine. The US did not do anything to cause this. Russia chose it all on their own.

Putin's crap about "protecting ethnic Russians/Russian speakers" is literally identical to Hitler's pretext of "protecting ethnic Germans to invade Czechoslovakia and Poland. In both cases the actual motive was simple conquest. And NATO expansion to Russia's borders (nevermind that NATO is already on Russia's borders), that's none of Russia's business. They don't get to dictate to other nations what alliances they're allowed to join. Russia sees NATO expansion as a "threat" because it takes away their ability to invade the nations that join NATO. Putin's Russia is an expansionist empire, which wants to take back all the nations that had previously been conquered but have since achieved independence.
