Comments by "" (@RedXlV) on "US Army just chose its next (light) tank" video.
38 tons is seriously bloated for a "light" tank, especially since BAE's M8 is 12 tons lighter with the same armament and mobility. Naturally General Dynamics' lobbyists were able to get the Army to pick the inferior option.

Of the 2 tanks in the "competition" (which seems obviously rigged in GDLS' favor), the inferior option was chosen. BAE's M8 would've been a far better choice. But yes, the CV90120 would've been an even better choice. Along with a CV9035 as the Bradley replacement.

With the Stryker AGS being fully disposed of this year, the 105mm would've disappeared from the US Army, leaving only on "tank gun" in the form of the 120mm. Yet inexplicably the new light tank brings the 105mm right back instead of consolidating everything into 120mm. Especially since the 120mm XM1147 round is pretty much perfect for the infantry support role this tank is supposed to fill. No comparable 105mm round yet exists.

ATGMs aren't the ideal weapon to shoot a concrete building that the infantry needs destroyed. A tank gun works far better for that. The real question is, why are they using a 105mm gun instead of a 120mm that would be able to use the same XM1147 multipurpose round as the Abrams? That's a superior obstacle-remover to any 105mm high explosive round. Sure, a similar 105mm round can be developed. But the 120mm round already exists and so do low-recoil 120mm smoothbore guns that will work on a light tank.

@winstonsyme7672 120mm guns have already been used on tanks and wheeled AFVs that are substantially lighter than this one, such as the Italian Centauro II and the Swedish CV90120 (both about 10 tons lighter than the Griffin II).

@1antag0nist53 BAE missed one of the deadlines due to COVID lockdowns. That was the pretext the Pentagon used to disqualify them and give the contract to GDLS' bloated Griffin II.

@target844 The XM1147 is exactly why it makes zero sense for this light tank to be armed with a 105mm instead of a 120mm. Plus the general advantage in logistics if all US Army tanks can use the same ammo. The 105mm was a really stupid decision.
