That's because the guy making this video is so right-wing that AfD seems center-left to him.

@ Like what? Like the fact that support for the European Union is a core part of the CDU platform, while AfD wants Germany to leave the EU. A gulf that wide cannot be reconciled.

@lizard450 20% is not "the will of the people."

The guy making this video brushes aside the differences that CDU/CSU have with AfD on foreign policy as unimportant, but those differences are in fact very important. Because for Germany, "foreign policy" includes EU membership. What's even harder for us Americans to understand than Germany's system of coalition governments is how important the European Union is to its member states. When two parties fundamentally disagree about whether their nation should even be in the EU, it's impossible for them to form a workable coalition. It's not a perfect analogy (since Germany is a nation in its own right, not state within a larger nation), but for Germany to leave the EU would be a lot like a state seceding from the United States.

@ How can a vehemently pro-EU party and a vehemently anti-EU party form a functional coalition?
3
How else can it work if no party wins a majority? And I don't mean a majority of the votes, I mean a majority of the seats.

Thomas Jefferson never said that. The first recorded instance of that statement was in 1914, and the first time it was attributed to Jefferson was in 1994.

The reason that CDU will not form a coalition with AfD is that those differences on foreign policy that you dismiss as unimportant are actually very important and completely irreconcilable. CDU is vehemently in favor of the European Union, whereas AfD wants it to be disbanded. And one of the fundamental values of the EU (which CDU agrees with) is open borders within Europe. Something that AfD opposes. AfD also opposes CDU's top priority of restoring Germany's depleted military. Because AfD wants Germany to be subordinate to Russia, unable to defend itself.

28% is not a majority.

@a00b00c All these people claiming things are getting worse in Europe are full of crap.

@ FPO got 31% of the seats in the Nationalrat, but not over 30% of the vote. They got 28.8% of the vote. So I was slightly underestimating how many votes they got. But the party with the most seats has no guarantee of being in government. They have convince another party or parties to join with them to provide enough votes for a majority. FPO was given the opportunity to form a government, but were unable to reach a deal with OVP to form a coalition.
1
Why should they be obligated to unite, when the two parties have completely irreconcilable differences?

@KsazDFW EV sales as a whole are still rising in Germany. Germans just prefer now to buy them from somebody other than Tesla.

@nealramsey4439 The only thing that's unique about Trump is the sheer scale of his corruption.

@Njordin2010 Sure, the original Nazis also had such people. Until the Night of the Long Knives.
1
@ Because that's really the only rational conclusion when listening to his assessment of Germany's parties.
1
@ But again, what would happen if no party has a majority of seats? How would the government be formed then?

You're talking about putting pressure on the "Elites", yet you're a follower of literal billionaire oligarchs.
