First past the post is completely terrible, but proportional representation would also be bad. Because it would destroy local representation. Everybody would be voting solely for which party they want to be in power, and not voting for a specific MP for the constituency in which they live. You wouldn't have your own MP who you can vote out in the next election if he displeases you. And thus the only accountability to individual MPs would come from party leadership, not from the voters. Likewise, there could no longer be independent MPs. Ranked choice voting would allow local representation to still exist, while also not producing the disproportionate mess that is first past the post.
