@neolithictransitrevolution427 There certainly could have been some Neolithic culture that lived in a location that's now underwater that we haven't discovered yet. In fact, it's pretty likely. But the idea that such a civilization was some super-advanced "Atlantis" that was far beyond all its contemporaries is highly unlikely indeed.

@richjordan6461 It depends on what you mean by "more advanced". Hunter-gatherers were entirely capable of building settlements with large stone buildings. Hunter-gatherers weren't as primitive as usually assumed. It's not very likely that an agricultural society existed much earlier than we're already aware of, because even if the location of the city itself was no underwater, agriculture alters the environment in ways that we'd be able to notice. It is however entirely possible that a society was building large stone structures even earlier than Boncuklu Tarla and Gobekli Tepe. Such a society would have been more advanced than its peers, while still not being some ancient sci-fi Atlantis.
