  1. It's astonishing that anyone wouldn't want to get rid of the electoral college. Oh, that's right. Republicans know that they'll never again have the support of the majority of Americans. The only way they can maintain power is in a system where some voters are considered more important than others. If every vote counted the same, the Republican Party would die very rapidly.

The electoral college is an innately evil concept, arbitrarily making some voters superior to others based only one what state they happen to live in. And Republicans can't win elections without cheating. That's why you rely so extensively on gerrymandering and voter suppression. And probably also hacking the voting machines.

Why would you think state legislatures will be more in tune with the interests of a state than the actual voters of the state, the very voters who elected the state legislature? Also, even when Senators were appointed by state legislatures, there was no ability to recall them. The state legislature would still have to wait until the 6-year term is over to replace them.

Also, "a republican form of government" is a government that's not a monarchy. Having the Senate as an unelected aristocracy would make the government less republican in form, not more.   16. The only change that should be made to the Senate is to change the number of Senators that are allocated to each state. Article V says no amendment can deprive states of having equal representation in the Senate, but it doesn't prohibit an amendment changing the number of Senators per state. I propose that instead of two per state, the number should be zero.

  17. Sean Jau I would say ban campaign donations entirely. End legalized bribery. And maybe if politicians were no longer spending all their time soliciting donations, they might actually do their jobs and show up for every vote. If they can't rely on having more campaign funds than their reelection challenger, instead they might want to actually build up a voting record to show they're doing what their constituents want. Also, I love the idea of shortening the gap between primaries and the general election.

  18. Howard Wiggins In 1790 after the first Census, the largest state (Virginia) was 10 times more populous than than the smallest (Delaware). Today, the largest state (California) has nearly 70 times the population of the smallest (Wyoming). The founding fathers would've never conceived that such extreme differences in state size would occur. What they also never would've expected was that the number of Representatives elected to the House would get artificially capped at 435 even though the population continued to grow. On the contrary, they intended that the House should be as closely proportional to state populations as possible, via adding new seats as needed with every Census. So not only does the Senate (as it was designed to do) give disproportionately large voting power to small states, ever since 1911 so does the House! By all rights there ought to be upward of 1000 members of the House of Representatives, in order to ensure that each House district is of roughly equal size and thus American voters are equally represented in the House.

  25.  @burtonhollabaugh3767  New York is only the 4th largest state, and Illinois is only the 6th largest. Between them, California, New York, and Illinois contain only 22% of the population. As such, you're blatantly lying when you claim that those states would control elections in the absence of the electoral college. The reality is that most Americans would prefer to abolish the electoral college. But most Republicans want to keep it, because it lets you win elections without having to get a majority of Americans to support you.

Which means that when Congress or state governments pass laws that infringe on our constitutional rights, there would no longer be any legal recourse to stop them. Also, repealing the 17th Amendment is by definition taking power away from the American people.

  36. The thing is, if Congress were given the power to override Supreme Court decisions, what is there to stop Congress from just openly defying their Constitutional limits? Suppose they passed a law cancelling elections and giving current members of Congress their positions for life. That's obviously far outside of anything the Constitution allows, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. As we both know, there's a long history of unconstitutional laws. And it doesn't even have to be something so extreme as Congress declaring themselves oligarchs for life. They could also do something like pass a law to confiscate all the guns in America. The point is, if Congress is given the power to override the Supreme Court's rulings, that means Congress gains the power to do literally anything it wants.
