@chriscalderin6677 You're the one who doesn't know why we have it. The reason the electoral college exists is slavery. It was created to enhance the electoral power of slave states.

@AfroAsiaticLanguages The thing you have to bear in mind about advocates for the electoral college is that they're incapable of doing basic math. Hence they all seem to think that California (11.8% of the population) and New York (6.4%) would somehow be able to decide all elections.

@gonefishn5138 Voting for Trump is the cult.
1
@iborg7301 No, that was not actually the purpose of the electoral college. In 1787 when the Constitution was being written, rural areas were the vast majority of the US population. The idea that founding fathers thought rural areas were in need of "protection" is complete nonsense. The actual purpose of the electoral college was to enhance the voting power of slave states. A popular vote system would mean that each state's electoral power would be based on how many voters it had. But with the electoral college, the number of slaves in a state would also increase its electoral power, even though those slaves were not eligible to vote.

@iborg7301 The number of states carried should not matter at all. Only the number of votes should matter.
1
@iborg7301 The electoral college "works"...to give some voters more power than others. There's every reason to change it.

@odeode4338 It's clearly not working, because his sentencing keeps getting delayed for no legally valid reason.
1
@odeode4338 As a matter of fact, no I don't like the people living in flyover country. Why should they get more of a say than the rest of the country despite being a minority? You seem to have a bizarre definition of "disenfranchise", given that you're claiming people in less populated areas would be disenfranchised by...having their votes count for exactly the same as everybody else.

@BrickWallNews-nf4qj She is ahead, you buffoon. And And the electoral college is always terrible.
1
@zdwade That might just be the dumbest thing that any human being has ever said. The electoral college is the worst electoral system ever devised. The claim that "there would be no country" without is literally insane.
1
@jimj.6412 As always, proponents of the electoral college are completely incapable of doing basic math. There are no "2 or 3 states" that have even close to a majority of the total US population.
1
@glennsutter9533 So what you're saying is, democracy is "skewed heavily toward liberals", because a majority of Americans are liberals. And you think that because of this, it would be better to just not have democracy. The majority winning the election is inherently fair.
1
@jimj.6412 Voting being "equal" means that every vote counts the same. If you give 10 people 1 vote each, and give 5 people 2 votes each, that's the definition of unequal.
1
@jimj.6412 Why should Wyoming be able to equal California? The highest populated states very clearly do not get their fair share of electoral votes. And the 15 smallest states are not 1/3 of the country. They're 5.5% of the country.
1
@jimj.6412 So what if each state has its own needs? Every state is represented. The problem is that the smaller states are overrepresented. Those "1/3 of the states" that it takes to equal California's vote? Combined they have less than half of California's population, yet they get the same vote. That in and of itself proves that the smaller states are given disproportionately large power.
