  3.  @blackenedmagic888  And every time there was this supposed trend away from manned aircraft, anybody who was paying attention should've been able to know better. Duncan Sandys predicated his cancellation of most manned aircraft (and defensive SAMs as well) on the premise that ballistic missiles would replace manned strategic bombers and that they would be impossible to defend against, so there would soon be no reason to bother with defensive weapons. And yet the Soviets were very blatantly not phasing out manned bombers, and instead were continuing to build them in large numbers. They clearly intended that in the event of war with NATO, they'd be launching mass bomber strikes that would absolutely need interceptors and SAMs to stop.

  4. The British government didn't even want to support Fairey's pursuit of the world speed record, completely pulling out of their collective arse reasons that the Delta 2 wouldn't be able to do it so it wasn't worth trying. Then Fairey proceeded to not just break but obliterate the record.
