  1. Yeah, the performance of the CR.42DB was largely just brute forced by putting such a powerful engine on it. There's quite a bit that could've been done to streamline the design. Aside from a retractable landing gear, I suspect it also would've been possible to reduce the number of struts and braces on the wings. And to implement an enclosed cockpit.
