  1. Taiwan is a democracy, the PRC is a dictatorship. The PRC seeks to abolish the Taiwanese democracy and bring the island under their authoritarian rule. That's not a difference that can merely be "ironed out".

  2. Taiwan has never been part of the People's Republic of China. The fact that it used to be part of the previous Chinese nation doesn't give the PRC any sovereignty over it.

  3. Ukraine is the latest victim of Russian imperialism. And the example of Hong Kong is exactly why Taiwan knows better than to trust any Chinese promises that they'd get to keep their democracy after integration with the mainland.

  4.  @Dept246  The problem is that the PRC considers the status quo to only be a temporary situation. Meaning that at some point down the road, Taiwan will have to choose between either accepting PRC rule or declaring independence.

  10.  @panyaboonc5621  The problem is...look at what happened to Hong Kong. The Taiwanese people are certainly looking at it. Taiwan knows that that no matter what promises the PRC makes about continued autonomy after reunification, those promises will inevitably be broken and direct PRC rule will be imposed.
