Don't just visit, actually talk to the people. You'll learn that the Taiwanese people largely do not consider themselves Chinese.

That's because Ma is enormously unpopular.

Taiwan has never been part of the People's Republic of China. It's already independent.

@Aneh567 "Even" the old people? It's the old people who are the only generation where there's still majority support for unification with China.
2
@LoC28C The majority of the Taiwanese people vehemently oppose being "reunited" with China.

@mmhcc9907 Being ethnically Han Chinese doesn't mean they have to be of Chinese nationality.

The problem with maintaining the status quo is that it's inherently unsustainable.

The status quo is unsustainable.

Most likely, there's nothing that could convince "almost all Taiwanese" to consider unification acceptable.

@calisthenicsnoob9990 That "separate identity and independence" already exist.

@LoC28C The majority of Taiwanese want to maintain the status quo for now and eventually declare independence. Those who want reunification are the minority. The majority of Taiwanese don't even think of China as "the mainland" anymore, they think of it as an entirely separate country. Which regardless of the silly pretenses of "One China", is the actual reality. They've been separate countries since 1949.

@LoC28C Taiwan has been independent from the mainland for 74 years, so the question of how Taiwan would be able to survive without the mainland is bizarre. The mainland is not a protector of Taiwan, but the primary threat to it.

@mikes989 The people of Hong Kong were sold out by the UK and "returned" to China against their will.
