The popular vote playing a role "at the state level" is irrelevant. The electoral college has always been a blatantly terrible system, no matter how much you lie your ass off by claiming nobody objected to it until 2016. Not to mention your nonsense claims of fake dossiers and whining about "the race card" because people have the audacity to point out that Trump is a white supremacist. Oh, and New Yorkers didn't want or need Amazon's "HQ2" scam. Businesses don't need to be given massive tax breaks to operate out of NYC. Businesses already want to be there simply because it's NYC, the largest city in the US and the financial capital of the world.

@dnciskkk9037 In reality, the electoral college empowers fascism by allowing a literal fascist to be "elected" despite being rejected by the majority of voters. Also, California is not a city, you blithering idiot.
3
@dnciskkk9037 California and New York contain less than 18% of the population, you ignoramus. 18% of the population can't control an election that's based on popular vote. The electoral college is tyranny of the minority.
3
@dnciskkk9037 Your deranged idiot, the 3/5th clause was massively in favor of the slaveowners. The alternative wasn't to count slaves as a full purpose for the purpose of representation in Congress. The alternative was to not count the slaves at all, and only have free citizens count toward the population. The 3/5th clause made slave states vastly over-represented in Congress right up until the 13th Amendment was enacted.
3
@dnciskkk9037 Well since the rest of the country isn't 60% Republican and 40% Democratic, you're full of shit. And *again*, California and New York are states, not cities. And yes, we want to diminish the weight of the vote in less populous states. We want the weight of every single vote to be identical. Your vote shouldn't count extra because you live in a smaller state. Every single American citizen should count the same as every other American citizen. No more and no less.
3
States can't secede from the union. Idiot.
3
@Charles-cs6ej What planet are you living on? It's obviously not Earth, since the United States is the only nation that elects a head of government via anything even vaguely resembling the electoral college.
2
@ElizaDolittle Yes, your arguments in favor of the electoral college are extremely ignorant. There could be nothing less fair than making some people's votes more valuable than others simply based on where they live.
2
@roberthicks1612 Just because you assume illegals must be voting doesn't make it so. A fake ID doesn't allow you to vote, and there were not any Democrats telling illegals to vote. The reality is that you cannot produce even a single shred of evidence of illegal immigrants having voted. It doesn't happen, and no amount of fake "studies" will change that.
2
@roberthicks1612 That's the opposite of reality. There is no evidence of Hillary committing any crimes. There are mountains of evidence of Trump committing dozens and dozens of crimes throughout his life.
2
t1tacal You're completely wrong about that. Lincoln won the popular vote. Idiot.
2
@belkyhernandez8281 The electoral college isn't a check on tyranny. It is tyranny. The tyranny of the minority. It's all well and good to protect the minority from the whims of the majority. But that's not what the EC does. The EC subjugates the majority to the whims of the minority.
1
You don't have a mind to be out of, kristina.
1
This was the hottest July on record, you idiot.
1
@ElizaDolittle The US has HIGHER levels of pollution than any country other than China. We produce much more pollution that the likes of India, Pakistan, and Egypt. So quit lying.
1
@ElizaDolittle You're such a pathetic liar. Liberals would never want the electoral college reinstated if it gets abolished. Also, you're absolutely deranged if you think California is shifting back toward Republicans.
1
@andymonk9505 More gibberish. The US shutting down coal fired plants doesn't result in China being able to build more of them. China would be able to build those plants either way.
1
@andymonk9505 And what does that have to do with your nonsense claim that the US shutting down coal plants is what "allowed" China to build more?
1
@andymonk9505 I suppose there's some merit to calling "cap and trade" a farce. We should've just imposed a strict cap on carbon emissions, without the "trade" part.
1
@andymonk9505 Really, I'm missing the point? Then why are you the one who keeps spouting random irrelevancies?
1
If a Democrat would be elected every time without the electoral college, that proves there's something very wrong with the Republican Party. Why is so impossible for a Republican to appeal to an actual majority of American voters? Why do you think only Democrats would ever be able to get majority support? Republicans certainly used to be able to win the popular vote, so why can't they do it anymore?
1
No, Derrick, that most certainly was not why the electoral college was instituted. In 1787 when the Constitution was written, less than 20% of all Americans lived in cities. America was over 80% rural. And even today, you don't know anything about the US population if you think 4 or 5 big cities would be able to decide an election. You'd need well more than 100 of the largest cities to come up with 50% of the population. You seem to vastly underestimate just how many cities there are in the US, and how many people there are in the US. The reality is that the electoral college was instituted to limit the power of the voters, and preserve the power of the wealthy aristocracy.
1
@Zebra Better than having the minority rule over the majority.
1
We don't have proportional representation at all.
1
@jacobw446 No, Jacob, you're still wrong. A republic simply means not a monarchy. There are many republics that are dictatorships. Voting for a representative = representative democracy. For example, Britain is not a republic. It's a monarchy. But British people still vote for their representatives. Same for Canada, Australia, and Japan, to name a few.
1
@jacobw446 The EC subjugates the MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE to minority rule by the small population states. That is tyranny of the minority. That is dictatorship. Also, your math is completely wrong. It would take the 11 largest states, not 4, to produce a majority of the population.
1
@jacobw446 Are you perhaps familiar with the People's Republic of China and the Islamic Republic of Iran? Those are republics. And dictatorships. Another example that previously existed was the Soviet Union. A republic is defined by the fact that the head of state is not a hereditary monarch. The definition you're using for republic actually refers to a "representative democracy". You also don't seem to grasp what "direct vote" means. Electing the President via popular vote is not "direct vote", because the President is an elected representative. "Direct vote" would mean that laws are passed by referendum rather than by Congress.
1
@jacobw446 Right now, the bigger states are enslaved by the smaller ones.
1
@jacobw446 You keep using the word "republic" without any clue as to what it actually means.
1
@jacobw446 You've repeatedly made it clear you don't know what a republic is. And the electoral college is not liberty. It's the tyranny of the minority.
1
@jacobw446 None of them recognized the threat of tyranny of the minority. And Hans von Spakovsky, an official at the far-right Heritage Foundation, can go to hell. He was only able to be placed on the Federal Election Commission by a recess appointment, because he was too extreme to be confirmed by the Senate.
1
@jacobw446 You keep asking that irrelevant question. States don't have any choice of leaving the union.
1
That would be a dictatorship.
1
t1tacal But in the process of preventing a tyranny of the majority, the electoral college has created a tyranny of the minority. The less populated states aren't getting equal representation in the federal government, they're getting more representation.
1
You've shown that you have no brain at all.
1
@mmakshak All the nonsensical lies you post are strong evidence against you having a functional brain.
1
She's 100% correct, and you are 100% stupid.
1
If conservatives would start a violent civil war over the abolition of the electoral college, my response to that is GOOD. That's even more reason to make it happen. Disposing of the traitors would be worth it.
1
@ElizaDolittle And voting "indirectly" for the President is an idiotic concept that has no actual value. The electoral college makes such that everyone in the US is not fairly represented.
1
@jacobw446 The EC is absolutely minority rule. And the states are not "independent nation states". They never have been.
1
@Daniel-ep9si Do you think that it's somehow better to have majority opinions suppressed? Because that's what the electoral college has done.
1
@jacobw446 No, smaller states don't have rights. Neither do larger states. States don't have rights at all. Only people have rights.
1
@Daniel-ep9si That's not true at all. The electoral college allows the majority to be ignored. Also, there's never been any push among Republicans to abolish the electoral college. If Republicans ever do decide they want the EC gone, it'll be abolished very quickly. Because Democrats will still agree that it needs to be abolished.
1
@jacobw446 No, we are a single nation with 50 component states. They are not "nation states". And neither states nor the federal government have "rights". Governments have powers, not rights. Only people have rights.
1
@jacobw446 As to what the founding fathers wanted? So what. They weren't God. They didn't get everything right, and we shouldn't run everything on the basis of what a group of 18th century aristocrats wanted.
1
@jacobw446 "Socialist aristocrats"? LMAO
1
That's completely and utterly false on every level. What the electoral college does is subjugate the majority of the population to the will of the minority. Those urban areas that you dismiss as "very insular" are where more than 2/3rd of Americans live. Dismissing the vast majority of Americans as "far-away elites" shows that you don't want freedom, you want dictatorship...just so long as the dictator is on your side.
1
@roberthicks1612 That's complete gibberish. With a direct popular vote, every single person would have exactly the same voice. And there are no illegal aliens voting. It straight-up doesn't happen.
1
@roberthicks1612 The system we have now is the one that did put a proven criminal in the White House to betray America.
1
@roberthicks1612 No, there most certainly is not any such evidence. You're simply repeatedly lying. No Democratic candidate has ever told people that they'll be deported if they don't vote. And you can't provide any actual examples of people who are being deported saying that they voted. You just have completely fake claims of people anonymously having made such an "admission".
1
@dnciskkk9037 The problem with your nonsense arguments is that you're pulling those percentages out of your ass.
1
PTP120122 More votes than each other candidate is winning the popular vote. Since the Democrats didn't (and couldn't, given the vast ideological divide between North and South) consolidate behind a single candidate in 1860, that was never going to happen. Also, John Bell wasn't a Democrat. He was the Constitutional Union Party candidate.
1
PTP120122 While Democrat Stephen Douglas was not a slave owner, and opposed the CSA. So what exactly was your point? The Constitutional Union Party were not Democrats. BTW, in the vast majority of states right now, only a plurality of votes is required for a candidate to win an election.
1
@twk21twk Those smaller states are the freeloading welfare recipients. They're being subsidized by tax revenue from the economic powerhouses like California, New York, and Illinois.
1
@twk21twk Try living in reality for once in your life.
1
@twk21twk You're so full of shit that it's overflowing out of your mouth.
1
@twk21twk In reality, it's states like California and New York that subsidize the rest of the US with their tax dollars. The "red states" like Alabama and Mississippi are the "freeloaders".
1
@nickthompson1812 The electoral college was created so that the wealthy aristocracy would remain in charge. To give some power to the ordinary voters, but not very much.
1
Yes, you blithering idiot, we all know that the electoral college doesn't have to vote according to the popular vote. That's precisely what makes the electoral college such a horrible system.
1
The electoral college is what allowed Trump, the actual single worst candidate in history, to be elected.
