What actually happened is that the Orthodox Church of Ukraine severed all ties with the Russian Orthodox Church. Putin is a heretic to the Orthodox religion, as is the Russian Orthodox Church's leader, Patriarch Kirill. And no, Russia's assertion to have annexed parts of Ukraine were not in accordance with United Nations rules. They are in fact in flagrant violation of the UN Charter, as well as defiance of the actual desires of the population of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk, and Donetsk. No amount of fake referendums will change that fact, and the Russian invaders will all be driven out.

And the war in Donbas was from day one a Russian invasion. The so called "rebels" and "separatist militias" were actually just the Russian military.

Nor are any American "experts" saying that there have been 400,000 Ukrainian casualties. It's Russia, not Ukraine, who's mobilizing teenagers and elderly men as cannon fodder. What you assert to be "new territorial realities" will never be recognized, and Ukraine will join NATO.
