  1.  @banzaibailey5891  The issue is that "prior art" invalidates a patent. You can't validly patent something that's already been invented by somebody else. If it can be proven that somebody else had already invented it before you filed your patent, your patent becomes invalid. The Spencer-Roper patent presumably was still valid for the specific mechanism involved. But Winchester proving that the other pump-action firearms already existed means that they couldn't patent the entire concept of a pump-action firearm. Likewise, the existence of the Lefaucheux revolver (patented in France in April 1854) should've invalided the Rollin White patent (filed in April 1855). I'm not sure whether this simply never got brought up at the time, or if the courts illegally ignored it to preserve White's patent. It might well be the latter, seeing as White's patent should also have been invalid since it involved a mechanism that didn't work.

  2.  @TugaAvenger  The logic (such as it is), is to have a single part that's considered "the gun", so that no amount of of disassembly (short of irreversible destruction of that part) will make it cease to be a gun. And since barrels and bolts are generally somewhat-easily replaceable parts, the receiver was deemed a better option of what to regulate. They didn't anticipate that guns would become modular to the point that the receiver would also become an easily-replaceable part.

  3. I'm guessing that import mark really does refer to Douglas County, Nevada. And that the county rather than a city is on the mark because the importer was in more or less the middle of nowhere, outside of any city's limits. And "Silver Bullet" is probably the importer's name.

  5. I always thought it was a step backwards when Sweden switched from 6.5x55 to 7.62 NATO. Maybe not for machine guns, but for rifles anyway. Imagine a G3 in 6.5mm.

  9. They did that. Re-barrelling the 7.35mm rifles to 6.5mm was considered more trouble than it was worth, but the M38 kept being manufactured in 6.5mm.

  10.  @Aliyah_666  The fluted barrel is a ridiculously manpower-intensive way to save weight, though. You remove considerably more metal by simply using a shorter barrel. Which is exactly what the Soviets eventually did with the M91/30, though I think they would've been well-advised cut the barrel down a few inches shorter than they did. 29 inches is still overly long for an infantry rifle. Even the 27-inch barrel the Finns settled on is longer than necessary, but still an improvement.

  13. Couldn't they have modified it to fire a larger grenade? While increasing the grenade diameter would've required redesigning the whole launcher assembly so that it's further offset to the side of the rifle, the other method that would've been possible is to increase to length of the grenade and the cup. Since such a change would've required no further modification at all to the rifle beyond just attaching a longer cup, it seems like it would've been something worth trying.

  14. France (like most of Europe) had a rifle shortage during WW1. As such, they weren't in the business of replacing guns that were still capable of shooting a modern cartridge. They even bought new single-shot Remington Rolling Blocks in 8mm Lebel for rear-line service. The Lebels remained in use during WW1 because there weren't enough Berthiers to replace them. After the war, the Lebel was mostly replaced, but some (mostly cut down into carbines) were still around in rear-line units even during WW2. The French Army was severely under-funded in the interwar years.

  15. In Iran and Afghanistan they use a different version of the Islamic calendar that has a 365 day year. But since Afghanistan didn't adopt that calendar until 1922, these rifles would be dated with the standard Islamic calendar with a 354 day year.

(And the UN then idiotically insisted that Katanga had to remain part of Congo. Because for some reason the arbitrary borders imposed by the 19th century colonizers needed to be kept intact, even though it meant that groups who violently hate each other have to be in the same country and ruled by a dictator.)

  18. I believe the primary reason for Arisaka dust covers vanishing was actually the IJA collecting and scrapping them as metal shortages became more of a problem. Also, IIRC the Manchurian Mauser dust covers were extremely well-fitted and wouldn't have caused much noise.

  19.  @geodkyt  The ATF has made enough nonsensical rulings that they clearly don't care about looking stupid. The ATF interpretation of 922r is itself a blatant example. The notion that if for example you take an SKS out of its original stock and drop it into one of those ugly synthetic ones, that's "assembly" of a firearm and thus subject to 922r is obviously ridiculous. The letter of the law was obviously meant to apply to importing "parts kits" and building a functional gun out of them.

Since 7.62x54R and .303 British are very similar cartridges (both are rimmed, bottleneck cartridges using the same diameter bullet, and the overall length and rim diameter both differ by less than 1mm), that's not a very difficult conversion. Especially when you're putting on a new barrel to begin with. But if you've got a lot of both Enfields and Mosin-Nagants in stock, it seems like the logical thing to do would be pick one caliber or the other. Either convert all the Enfields to 7.62x54R or convert all the Mosins to .303. The former is probably easier, since even if the .303 is only slightly longer than the 7.62x54R, that still might cause some issues with feeding .303 out of a Mosin's magazine. Though I suppose if you're a poor nation and have a lot of ammo in both calibers as well, you don't want to throw away either caliber. And dividing their use based on geography reduces the logistical problems from using two rifle calibers.

  27. I wonder why they didn't just have the cocker/decocker work like in the Sauer 38H. Pull the lever to cock, pull it again to decock. No pulling of the trigger involved, and you can tell if it's cocked by the position of the trigger.

  28. The US had a very similar infrared sight for the T3 and M3 variants of the M1 Carbine (which Ian has already done a video on). The T3 actually saw combat on Okinawa, and the M3 was used in the Korea War. Fortunately the Vampir never actually made it into combat, or at least I don't think it did.

  29. The "Norway" scratched into the receiver was done by the importer. Import marks as we know them now weren't required yet, but at the time imported goods in general (not specifically firearms) were supposed to be marked with the nation of manufacture. (That's also why it's written in English as "Norway" and not in Norwegian as "Norge".) It's oddly appropriate that whoever imported these crudely-made rifles saw fit to comply with the import law in such a crude manner.

  32.  @salty_armorer4027  Because if you just go ahead and do it without getting their approval first, the ATF will deem it illegal, arrest you, and seize your gun at the first opportunity. Unfortunately, the courts have shown zero interest in doing anything about the ATF's stupidest rulings. It doesn't seem to matter to them if the ATF is contradicting itself. Or even if the ATF flatly contradicts the letter of the law that empowers it to make regulations in the first place, which should render some of their rulings flat-out illegal.

  33. As soon as I heard that they're going to train with a different, lower-velocity round than what will get used in combat, I immediately thought that's an incredibly bad idea. That means troops will spend long periods of time training with the lower-recoil practice ammunition, then went sent into combat the rifle they've gotten used to will suddenly kick harder because they're firing the hotter ammo. You train the same way you fight, or at least you're supposed to. Otherwise the training becomes less effective at preparing you to fight. Also, I think the Army essentially abandoning intermediate cartridges is an idiotic concept. And Russia's current combat performance (showing their infantry doesn't even understand basic combined-arms tactics and is so ill-equipped that some units are literally using Mosin-Nagants) makes the notion that we need a super-hot full power rifle cartridge to beat them laughable.

  41.  @stephenwoods4118  And his point was garbage. First off, it's not actually necessary that every weapon fire the same cartridge. Or even necessary a good thing for them to. Obviously there's a logistical advantage, but the ideal cartridge for a machine gun and the ideal cartridge for a rifle are not the same. There's no reason that the M1917 and M1919 wouldn't keep using the .30-06 even after a transition to .276 Pedersen in rifles. And yes, the BAR would've needed to either be replaced or converted to the new round. Which would've resulted in a much better version of the BAR in the process. Second, the fact that there's large stockpiles of the old ammo is not a reason to not change calibers. There were lots of .30-40 rounds when the switch to .30-06 (or initially .30-03) happened as well. And hell, it was 1932. Manufacturing hundreds of millions of the new cartridge could have provided thousands of new jobs during the Great Depression, while also giving American soldiers a better weapon.

  48. +William Hayden It's really a pity that .45 autos weren't in demand on the civilian market at all back then. If they were maybe Savage would've continued to develop their .45 pistol alongside its .32/.380 cousin. And then the US Army probably would've bought some as secondary pistols during WW1, same way they did Colt and S&W .45 revolvers.

  50. The thing that strikes me as odd about this is the rear sight. It seems like the existing P38 rear sight was simpler and should've just been re-used for the Volkspistole. And those little circular "wings" on the sides seem entirely unnecessary for a pistol sight anyway.
