20:24 Translation: British soldiers deployed to the Falklands didn't like the fact that the local militia had better rifles than they do. So the MoD downgraded the FIDF by giving them L85A2s.

@willdabeastIam My favorite part is how the Argentine government tried to make the sinking of the General Belgrano out to be some kind of scandal. While Hector Bonzo, the actual captain of the Belgrano's take was basically "yeah, they got me fair and square". He knew that the the Argentine Navy had simply rolled the dice on a high-risk strategy and came up snake eyes.

@radiculousj2494 Also seem to have been based on an overestimation of how prevalent body armor is among potential adversaries. A brief timeline: December 2017: Next Generation Squad Weapon program is launched, based largely on concerns that Russian body armor would make the 5.56x45mm round ineffective in the event of a war. April 2022: The adoption of the XM7 in 6.8x51mm is announced. May 2022: Russian soldiers have body armor?

I think the real reason that the MOD foisted L85s on the FIDF is that British troops deployed to the Falklands kept complaining that the locals had better rifles. And instead of upgrading the British Army, they downgraded the FIDF.

@mrjockt Depends on whether the 6.8x51mm actually goes through, or fizzles out after the initial "adoption". And frankly, what the US and NATO as a whole should adopt is a modern version of 7x43mm.

They're a self-governing territory rather than actually part of the UK. So they get to set their own laws. In theory, a similar situation to what the Dominions used to be before becoming fully independent. Just a lot smaller.

@baneofbanes It's now a rifle that functions just fine. But it's still heavy. There was nothing HK could do about that.
