Honestly, it seems to me that instead of submitting the 4.85mm and the SA-80, Enfield should've responded to the 1977 NATO trials by bringing out the EM-2 and 7x43mm and telling NATO "we already got it right 26 years ago".

By all accounts the A2 is fine, aside from being no the heavy side for an assault rifle. They average over 25k rounds between failure, and upward of 30k rounds in non-desert environments. But as originally built, the A1 had lots of problems.
