  2. As far as the Lebel name for the rifle goes? Lebel himself said that it should've been called the Tramond-Gras, since Tramond led the design team and Gras did most of the work on the rifle itself. He didn't think his name deserved to be on the rifle at all. But of course, that would make it sound like it's a Tramond modification of the existing Gras. Even though that's technically somewhat true (the rifle is clearly descended from the Gras), I'm guessing the French Army wanted it to sound entirely new, thus Tramond-Lebel at first and then shorted to just Lebel.
