  1.  @petebeatminister  .44 Russian also produced double the chamber pressure of the .44 American that preceded it. So it's not as if you would've just been able to convert the old guns to fire it safely anyway.

  2. I suppose that retooling to manufacture a different diameter of bullet was just simpler than retooling to manufacture a new diameter cartridge.
