  1. The American South wanted to annex the Yucatan at the time to make it another slave state. That's literally the entire reason any consideration was given.

  2. That's exactly what the Southerners at the time were hoping for, to make Yucatan a new slave state. But since it was so obvious that's what they wanted, all of the Northern states opposed it.
