  1. North and South Dakota exist literally because Republicans at the time wanted to protect their Senate majority by adding 4 new Senators in states that were likely to vote Republican. Where if the Dakota Territory had been made a single state, they would've only gotten 2 new Senators. And it worked perfectly for them. Democrats gained a significant House majority in the next election, but thanks to splitting the Dakotas, Republicans held onto a narrow Senate majority.
