Australia is a continent, not an island. If Australia were considered an island, what justification would there be for not also considering Antarctica and the Americas to be islands?

@JackRoopers No they don't. The Papuan people never agreed to be part of Indonesia. That's precisely why the Indonesian military grabbed 1,025 Papuans, declared them "representatives" of Papua, and held them at literal gunpoint to "vote" for Papua to be part of Indonesia.

@sultan9givewey The UN never endorsed the "referendum" as legitimate. They merely acknowledged that it had happened. And the 1,025 people the Indonesian military selected for the "vote" were not tribal chiefs. They did not in any way actually represent the Papuan people.

@munchezfonataba Chosen by who, though? That' the issue. They were chosen by the Indonesian military, not by the indigenous people of West Papua. And they had no actual choice in which way to vote, since the vote was quite literally held at gunpoint.

@marcellotenarta5233 Indonesia absolutely refuses to hold a referendum in Papua, because they know what the result would be. Also, Indonesia did not simply allow East Timor to leave after the referendum. The Indonesian military and pro-Indonesia militias responded to the referendum with widespread massacres of the Timorese people, requiring UN military intervention to stop the violence.

Indonesia has colonized West Papua for the last 55 years. They had a mere 1,025 so-called representatives (selected by the Indonesian military and not by the Papuan people as a whole) "vote" at literal gunpoint to approve the annexation.

Yes. If any of those other parts of Indonesia want to separate, they should absolutely be allowed to do so. The reason only West Papua is getting talking about is that they're the ones that are actually fighting for independence. The rest of the islands seem to be fine with being part of Indonesia.

It's the exact opposite. You're arguing that Indonesia's colonial rule over West Papua is okay because it's non-western. And Britain does not own Papua New Guinea, which is a completely independent country.

So what are you saying? That the West Papuans are being colonized for their own good? That's what colonizers always say. They always tell their colonial subjects that being colonized is actually good for them.

@fabianicoles There was no "referendum". There was a fraudulent "vote" that was quite literally held at gunpoint by the Indonesian military, and consisted of just 1,025 people. And those people weren't the chosen representatives of the Papuan people either, they were chosen by the Indonesian military. The "Act of Free Choice" was even faker than a North Korean election.
