  3. Wayne Geddings That post illustrates that you don't even understand how debt works. The treasury pays interest payments for the debt of 20 years ago. Given how low interest rates are right now, when you account for even low levels of inflation over the next 20 years, that means interest payments that will go out then for today's debts would be close to zero. In fact, it could come out to a de facto negative interest rate. So why do people, especially foreign investors (both individual and government) keep buying US government debt? The same reason people buy gold. They figure that even if the value goes down in the future, it'll never be worth zero. They figure that even if the dollars they get paid back in 20 years have gone down in value overall, they'll probably still have gone up in value relative to the Euro and the Chinese yuan. In effect, foreign investors are paying the US government to take their money. That's why there's never been a better time for the US to borrow more.
