The fundamental problem with this "Chinese Commonwealth" concept is the same as the problem with "Chinese reunification": the people of Taiwan increasingly don't consider themselves Chinese at all. The majority specifically identify as only Taiwanese. And the majority of Taiwanese view China unfavorably and want less ties with them, not more.

  6. @@whitequetzal1190 That's the thing, the majority of Taiwanese no longer consider themselves Chinese at all, much like how Americans ceased to consider ourselves English and Scottish in the late 18th century. They certainly recognize that their ancestry is Chinese (aside from the indigenous Taiwanese minority, that is), but they've been separated long enough for a distinct national identity to have formed.

  10. Ukraine and Russia didn't come to a peace deal. The negotiations went nowhere, because their positions were completely incompatible. Ukraine insisted that all occupied territory be returned to them, while Russia insisted that Ukraine recognize their annexation of that territory. Similarly, negotiation between China and Taiwan isn't going to work because China wants to "reunify" with Taiwan, while Taiwan wants to be independent from China.
