  2. The problem with the F-35 isn't that it doesn't work, it's that it's been so expensive to get it to work. I suppose it's understandable given how much new technology was being implemented, and everything learned in the process will help with the next generation of fighters that come after it. Though I still think the insistence on a common airframe was a mistake. Trying to save money by maximizing the common components is understandable, but not if it makes the whole project more expensive because of the greater technical challenges of making a single airframe do too many different things. I'm pretty sure the whole thing would've worked out better (as in, lower overall cost and getting operational sooner) if the F-35B had been severed from the F-35 and allowed to have a completely optimized airframe.
