  1. Remember the poor acceleration of early jets. The turboprop could burn more fuel in the excess air flow and produce more torque without increasing engine speed which could be absorbed by the propeller blade pitch increase of the contra-rotating constant speed propeller. Many direct drive turboprops run at a fixed rpm and deliver power changes through the prop pitch. Not having any conventional propeller slipstream swing, asymmetric blade effect or torque reaction would have been equally welcome.
