I think its his way to stay calm...I have a friend who does this, everytime she feels unsecure and has to talk to people she is not comfortable with, she puts on a smile and keeps it on through the conversation.

@Angela Wilson this story might not be tragic or sad to him though. He grew up with it,it's everyday-life for him to have a dead sister, that he might never have felt close with in the first place. He might have some level of autism or asberger or something, that makes him emotionless also. we don't know his story.

@eriley7809 exactly,to him his sister has been dead almost always. He doesn't "miss" her or feel sad to talk about her because he doesn't remember what it was like to have her around. OR to think about her is too sensitive for him so he covers it up by smiling.

I have a friend who always smiles when she gets angry, she kind of shields her emotions by smiling,no one can see HOW angry she is as she is smiling through the argument. I think this brother was defending himself by smiling, doesn't make him guilty,COULD be guilty but the smiling doesn't proove it. AND,his sister has been dead his whole childhood,it's so normal for him to have a sister who died that he doesn't know to miss her or feel sad about her. Some people would miss their sibling anyway but he might not have fond memories of her at all,in fact she was at beauty contests all the time and he did his own things so they might not have been close at all.
