imho, instead of purges, they should have had multiple political parties that, if needed to be constrained, be constrained only by being a communist or socialist party. In other words, Lenin, Stalin, a Russian Mao, and Trotsky would all be the leader of their own communist parties within the supreme soviet, instead of one leader getting power and expelling or killing the others. Majority or coalition would be needed to pass laws. Ideally, 5-9 parties in the supreme soviet and 2-4 parties in govt would allow for negotiation and competition for votes on the best future for the soviet union.
This could even be extended to all of a global communist union.
