They took the "idolizing" characteristic AWAY from politicians, they served as a buffer for the political powers so that they could NEVER acquire such an intoxicating drug, politicians should NEVER have such power, the queen was a unifying symbol, a constant, she protected the VERY important symbolism and national identity of her people, leaving the political squabbling to politicians. In this the UK are unique, they have a separation of powers with the extra layer of keeping the power of SYMBOLISM and national identity separate from politics.
