Tolkien was a religious guy, and in christianity, and Islam too (not sure about judasim) man progresses on the outside but always gets corrupted and self destructs in the end, its a cycle that keeps repeating itself through the ages and each time humanity becomes more degraded the downfall becomes worst and worst (think ww2 compared to rome vs carthage), when humans were tribes fewer people died to wars and greed, nature was the biggest antagonist, in ww2 we nuked 2 cities and over 100 million people (more than half were non combatants) died. ww3 is on the way and it will make ww2 look like a slumber party, in fact it has already begun, the culture is stale and regressing backwards more than ever, and now BILLIONS suffer all over the world from economic problems and biological warefare (thanks CHINA) and tens of millions die from these alone. man is destined for darkness and decay not hope and change.
