  1. Probably able to deal with much higher density rings in water than in air - providing a much more visible result. Also, water is different than air in that you can compress air - and you cannot compress water, which I imagine would have a bearing on the physics involved - and the result. I'm going to go with this being a completely different thing in water than in air.
