@quikgamer "a diamond is forever" marketing turned what is effectively cheap carbon crystals into a world wide monopoly on an invented tradition where what should cost $10 is sold for 1000x that. So, yeah, you can achieve success purely on the back of marketing efforts.

Only one worth it is quake 2.

The only people who need to worry about this run data centers, where your monthly power bill could be measured in 'standard 3 bedroom house'. 10% at that scale is very important, and across your 1000x computers, lets you purchase the 100 you need to makeup or exceed the performance shortfall. If there is a performance shortfall.

I'm hoping for RISC-V cpu with igpu... In 5 years. But amd is most likely to own that because they are not succumbing to the "Must build super expensive stuff". So much more likely to be able to respond to a disruption from below. Their market fit/awareness is just that much better than nvidia, and they are involved with open-source which gives them a leg up. That said, IBM still makes chips. Power9 ? Open power9? So much interesting times :3

Not arm yet

@Legion849 surprising as it may seem, linux had been "just working" better than windows for hardware support for about a year, maybe more now. When audio is easier and more reliable in linux than Windows, you know something is ~wrong~ right with the world.

@Legion849 naw, was replying to the OP, they still have to take on arm, maybe even IBM, but their high end chips kinda do.

I dont care about brand. I use linux and care about open source. So... AMD is kinda my only real option. Nvidia please fix.

@gordongoodman8342 amd have gone whole hog on the opensource driver. This means that it out performs the closed source. Now you might laugh and say 'amd write bad code', but that is the point of open source. Lots of very smart people are willing to give their time to make tgis the best. More than even nvidia are willing to hire. And its more secure (within the limitations of trusting trust, see ken's paper reflections on trusting trust) I know these reasons are not for everyone, and i don't care to change anyone's mind. They are important to me though.

How much did windows cost for your pc?
1
Same same. Or I may switch to AMD if their offering is equivalent to 1080ti. This is due to MTBF (my 1080ti is a bit... Abused) and Linux support (yay open source and drivers; FOSS is a hill I will die on)
1
Me still rocking 7700k and 1080ti.

Total win.

Devil's advocate your devil's advocate: stability enhancements in bios each month is not necessarily indicative of poor stability. It may be a different development process: they may have a more agile cycle where you go with more, smaller changes and get feedback. Each release may be of impeccable quality, but just cut into smaller pieces. I'm not saying this is the reality, just that you can't assume anything from frequency of release. If you could, we would see weekly intel security releases /s

Well beyond inflation price changes.
