  5. Because air travel is far more efficient than train travel especially when trying to go from one side to the other side of the country in a timely manner? America has a rather large land mass. The average European country you like to idolize doesn't.

It has operating costs and other expenses to account for. Plus it has to generate its own revenue. Can't always rely on taxpayers to bail it out.
