What about the property taxes, repair and maintenance costs and insurance premiums?
10
@atesah <people are entitled however to have shelter> No they're not. Terms and conditions exist for a reason.
6
<Wage stagnation is also a problem factor here…> And currency devaluation.
6
<They don't care about renters.> Why should they? They don't owe renters anything.
5
They do especially as they were the ones who took on the legal and financial risks of ownership.
5
@atesah Yet you still wouldn't be able to afford it anyway.
5
@Doraemonhandle It never really was. That's why in most cities in the world, the poor live on the outskirts.
4
1) For what? Living in a place you can't afford is not a right. Either pay up or move out to somewhere you can afford. 2) Meaning higher taxes for everyone else to support it putting some in poverty in the process.
3
@rebeccahillsares8253 < but people are suffering. > Some of them by their own doing.
2
<Tenants have a right to housing > But landlord have the right to set the terms and conditions housing will be provided under.
2
@MentionBiscuit How about buy your own place?
2
The rich save and invest while the poor spend all they have.
2
Tenants = losers.
2
@marilynnemeth3625 AirBnB is just a consequence of government policy making long-term rentals costly for landlords not just financially but legally.
2
<It is the short term rentals and the big companys trying to make money off people 100% > Thanks to government restrictions that make it costly to build and own housing leaving only the richest of the rich to take on the task.
1
And in the end tenants suffer in the form of either having to pay higher rent on whatever unit is still around or no place to rent at all.
1
@stevenshorten6184 Actually no place to buy either as the prices are still out of reach anyway.
1
Then relax the zoning laws and restrictions on building.
1
LOL. Housing is not a right. And your suggestions are the exact reason no one wants anything to do with rental housing. Government meddling made it non-viable.
1
@roddc7696 Housing is not a right if you can be denied it or have it taken from you.
1
@sew_gal7340 For what? It's not the rich's fault a lot of the poor can't manage what they have to save their lives.
1
If you're not prepared to buy your own place, then you don't have the right to complain about how much landlords decide to charge or what they do with their properties.
1
@ninemoonplanet Which is legitimate.
1
But AirBnb's are the result of lopsided rental laws favoring tenants that made long-term rentals costly and no longer worth maintaining.
1
89% of canada's land is Crown-owned.
1
Then get your own house. Otherwise you don't have the right to complain about how much a provider decides to charge you.
1
@rainorshine7816 <Remember always, the “essential” workers have a right to safe and affordable housing too.> Also remember always owners have the right to tell them NO.
1
Yes it is. If you're so concerned about getting exploited, why don't you save your money and buy your own house?
1
@atesah And replace it with what? Equally corrupt greedy in the form of entitled socialism?
1
@FreeJulianAssange23 Renters are even more so expecting society to pay for their poor life choices and spending habits.
1
<This displaced so many that lived in an area for generations.> But never bothered to buy the property they lived on if it wasn't owned by the city. Complacency did them in.
1
Government regulations are the reason affordable housing are not even legal let alone viable to build .
1
<The business class doesn’t care, and simply won’t deliver affordable housing. > Because that's not their job. <They also will destroy all our old buildings and prime farm land to build low quality condos and subdivisions.> Some old buildings are too costly to renovate and are better off demolished. <Although they could build more affordable units, they mostly aren’t.> Too costly to maintain. Current affordable suffer from mismanagement and not generating enough revenue to cover basic operating costs due to tenants being undercharged in rent.
1
Maybe because the tenant's perspective is that of someone who needs to get his financial stuff in order? Landlords have every reason to be entitled as they own the property and are well within their rights to grant or deny/take back an apartment to whoever he/she wants for almost any reason.
1
No. High taxes, bureaucracy and punitive regulations killed Canada's productivity. <big class of unproductive people: landlord/agents/financing.> No. Try the government/public sector.
1
That money has to come from somewhere to support that minimum wage increase.
1
Inequality is natural.
1
Exactly.
1
While tenants are operating on entitlement.
1
No it's not. Even social housing has restrictions on who can get it.
1
@justluckyz Exactly.
1
You mean Hong Kong.
1
Exactly.
1
Hey renters, why don't you live within your means and /or get a better-paying job so you can afford to buy your own house?
1
No. And not even close.
1
So are renters. It's not the landlords' job to provide housing for those too irresponsible to buy their own house.
1
@UseURHead Yes. Irresponsible as a lot of tenants seem to take their lifestyles more seriously than their futures.
1
Lopsided regulations favoring tenants enabled AirBnB.
1
<Part of the reason why AIRBNB is so popular is due to the fact short term rentals come with less strings attached. The Residential tenancy act, while possibly created with good intentions is a primary reason why home owners are fearful of renting. Renters can damage your property, squat without paying rent for months and can abuse the system to exploit landlords> Exactly.
1
Government meddling in the form of lopsided regulations favoring tenants made AirBnB a thing.
1
No. Corporate rentals are products of government restrictions that made housing costly to build and own ensuring only the richest of the rich can do such.
1
@Mallory-Malkovich Some of them are condemned.
1
@That90sShow Or an SRO at a run-down motel if those are still around.
1
@MariamMariam-ue7vz They took on the risks of ownership while the only risk renters took was a rejected application.
1
@AuntyKsTarot No it isn't as any entity has the right to tell you NO.
1
Government meddling is the reason AirBnB exists.
1
@thezu9250 Because government meddling made long-term rentals too costly to own and maintain.
1
<How is it that people making minimum wage suppose to live?> Roommates, marriage/common-law relationship, live on the outskirts and other less desirable areas, etc. <Yet people need their essential services but these essential workers don’t have a right to affordable housing? Something wrong here> Not really. Housing is not a right and they probably wouldn't be eligible for affordable housing as working full-time at minimum wage would put a worker over the threshold.
1
But local government is the reason why housing is expensive and in short supply.
1
@cloutm_anager8262 AirBnB is a product of pro-renter/anti-landlord government policy.
1
Rents are high due to land values and taxes.
1
No it isn't. And AirBnB is the result of government over-regulation.
