@benimimi $14 CAD = $10.64 USD. And Toronto is a high COL area.
2
Haiti's perennially bad leadership and unskilled populace didn't help matters either.
2
Which was payback for how the whites (French) treated every black man, woman and child.
2
And certainly not without tyranny or foreign aid.
2
@MADCITYSTUDIOS They are capitalist welfare states. Many socialist ideas in place like what? Price controls? Closed-off command economies? One-party rule?
2
It figures when you don't have the skill or ambition to find a better job. <I'd rather have everything provided by the government and work a nothing job> Like people in the housing projects?
2
LOL. Bourdain only went to wherever his state-appointed tour guide would let him go which are places frequented by tourists and high-ranking bureaucrats.
2
What conservative rule? Haiti was doing far leftism before it even had an official name.
2
But the biggest contributor to Cuba's economic problems is the Cuban government itself. It's not the sanctions' fault that Castro killed off private enterprise and domestic production.
2
No they're not. Haiti paid off that debt in 1947.
2
@Legendofzedia And they got it. Only to become Russia's sugar-baby.
2
@eyeonlife No. The main reason for the economic crisis is the Cuban government's gutting of private enterprise and the local economy coupled with the loss of outside aid. The embargoes are of little consequence.
2
@JohnKFossil Same here in Canada with the making of Ottawa as the capital which is situated in between the 2 largest cities in the country, Montreal and Toronto along a river that divides its 2 most populated provinces, Quebec and Ontario.
2
Thanks to your own government.
2
@darthutah6649 Much of Africa haven't fully moved on from its post-independence socialist days.
2
@chrometutor-tipstricksandt9427 Communism was helping no one except Castro and the gang.
2
Just ask anyone from Western Africa or Vietnam.
2
Such as the 'hood.
2
<Democratic socialism does.> Not in Greece.
2
@gypsylips1950 Not really. It's not the US's fault that Castro destroyed private enterprise and domestic production in favor of foreign handouts from Soviet foreign aid to Canadian tourism to US remittances to ripping off Cuban doctors they ship out abroad for 90% of their true salaries.
2
End communism.
2
@gavriloprincip9634 He died in 2016.
2
Only if you're a tourist or a government official.
2
Not really. The US embargo is not responsible for the Cuban government underpaying their doctors and engineers.
2
While being ignorant of socialism/communism's failures in North Korea and Cambodia.
2
Not really. Just mismanagement and socialism. The sanctions are not responsible for price controls, hyperinflation, shortages due to the Maduro seizing and shutting down domestic production and everything else that was clearly well within his control.
2
But Haiti is among the top 20 poorest countries overall.
2
@uchennanwogu2142 Exactly. It's not the US's fault that Cuba killed off its producers and now can't feed itself or have much worth trading with the rest of the world even if it wasn't under sanctions.
2
@uchennanwogu2142 Pretty much.
2
But instead let China and Russia do it instead.
2
The cab driver has access to foreign currency that is off-limits to the average Cuban citizen.
2
@GTNTAnimations And thanks to communism, they can't produce anything for themselves in an adequate let alone sustainable manner.
2
Nope. Cuba's difficulties are due to Castro's policies that destroyed its economic base.
1
South Sudan already had communism in the early 1970's.
1
Only one problem, though. The US has a robust private sector and the mathematicians are working on Wall Street, because they chose to. Whereas Cuba's private sector is next to non-existent and the educated people have to take up a side-gig just to feed themselves and their families, because their primary jobs (namely whatever the government assigned them) pay too little to live on. In other words, they don't have a choice.
1
@ Mandraquex3000 The same Democrat party also responsible for: - the displacement of the Black father from the household via its welfare policies - mass incarceration, mandatory minimum sentencing and the Prison Industrial Complex via the Crime Bill
1
@benlang360 Yet they're not living. Just barely surviving. The benefits are not cutting it.
1
All thanks to Maduro's policies that killed off the local producers in favor of foreign imports.
1
Bad on paper. And even worse in practice.
1
SJW's are just socialist and communist groupies.
1
Like what's happening in Venezuela.
1
And due to logistics costs. It cost money to transport and clear customs.
1
@ Lucca1988 How so? You know most capitalist countries have this thing called a middle class, right? It sure is if you enjoy the government being the 1% and everyone else being at its mercy.
1
Namely George W Bush and George Clooney.
1
The same 1% that largely vote Democrat, like Jeff Bezos?
1
@ RunningFromABear Canadian experience = they're hiring native-borns only.
1
@ C. Diamonds That's in hard numbers. But in percentages, Black people make up a disproportionate amount on Section 8.
1
Not nearly as much as socialism/communism. Venezuela would like a word with you on that.
1
Too bad they don't have a job market to put that education to use in.
1
@ Syfer Polski All capitalist countries with strong social safety nets and (racially and ethnically) homogeneous populations. Why don't socialists just admit what they really want is centrally-planned economies?
