Which is the result of the government controlling the food.
36
Nope. This is what happens when you can no longer afford the overly generous social programs and bloated pubic sector.
20
Visiting Cuba as a tourist is not the same thing as living in Cuba as a citizen.
14
@ Mack Dog Democratic socialism is a codeword for communism. By the way, Vladimir Lenin coined that term.
12
Yesterday's freedom fighter, tomorrow's tyrant. Haiti was no exception.
12
Zimbabwe has no economy to support that.
11
LOL. In a one-party state like China, anti-corruption = purging political rivals.
11
@EM-dw2yv Because Cuba's credit is poor from all the previous times they defaulted on their payments.
10
@ProjectHyena No. Cuba operating on a model that doesn't allow any efficient production of anything locally is the real issue.
10
It's not the DR's responsibility to rebuild Haiti. Why don't you take it up with the US and the ever-kleptocratic Haitian government?
10
@hi-gf5yl But socialism never was efficient to begin with. And there is only so much money and resources to go around to feed vast swathes of non-productive people that socialism inevitably produces. <In capitalism, businesses spend money advertising to make people buy obscene amounts of goods that they don't need, wasting resources that could have been better spent elsewhere or saved for the future.> As if socialism is known for efficient spending or saving or responsible management of resources given its legendary track record of mismanagement, misappropriation, misuse, neglect and waste summed up in two of its main features, chronic shortages and (intentional) famine. And what do you mean "make?" Are you trying to say that people are dumb and don't know what they need?
9
@davidpethick83 The facts are: Cuba had no real economy left after Castro decimated it having to be propped up by USSR and other countries making the sanctions of little consequence, but an excuse for the Cuban government to maintain the economic repression of its own citizens.
9
@bigm7886 How so? The DR is nowhere nearly as dysfunctional as Haiti.
9
But in all fairness, what good is having land if you don't know how to make use of it? This is where Mugabe ultimately screwed up. Giving land to political friends and those in no position to farm resulting in food shortages and famine and a country no longer able to feed itself.
8
@IshtarNike The embargo is nothing compared to what Castro did to local industry and the loss of Soviet aid to make up for it.
8
@petergreenwood7731 Smells like socialism just running its natural course.
8
Milei is the President Argentina needs. Time to shut down the gravy train.
8
Pretty much.
8
Really? It only seems miniscule, because in Cuba, Black people are threatened with jail if they dare complain thus forced to suffer in silence. Dictatorship aside, the racism that Black Cubans suffer is on par with the rest of Latin America.
7
No. Remove the command economy model. Period.
7
Apparently, Nguema is too cheap to do it himself.
7
@davidowens1424 Mostly pensioners.
7
Not quite. Whites still live better than Blacks in Cuba thanks to remittance payments and running the very few private industries allowed to operate.
7
@spiritanimal7516 And it's paying the price for not being male-dominated by its women being easy targets for refugees.
6
@degamispoudegamis What socialists/communists always say when their beloved model fails largely on its own.
6
@DukenJeanpierre Haiti from 1822 to 44.
6
How? Cuba doesn't produce much worth trading thanks to mismanagement and killing off the successful and productive. Ditch the command economy and really watch Cuba prosper.
6
@plung3r But none of them are citizens as Qatari citizenship is based in patrilineal lineage.
6
@nelsongutierrez5322 Don't forget that Haiti reinstated slavery after its food production levels plummeted and the population starved just to feed itself.
6
The embargo is nothing compared to the Cuban government's total control of the economy that killed off the wealth-producers.
6
No. It's real.
6
@josephosei3389 LOL.
6
Why would France need to make African leaders look bad when African leaders do a better job of it all by themselves?
5
With social assistance restricted to citizens.
5
Yes it did. Sanctions didn't cause Mugabe to give the farmland to political allies and those who don't know how to farm resulting in declining production, food shortages and eventual famine. Why didn't he give the land to the natives who actually knew how to farm due to experience working for Whites?
5
Said no one ever.
5
Also Laos.
5
Like a communist regime.
5
She is. A Party stooge.
5
You know that White Cubans have no presence outside of Miami, right? And Miami is not even the biggest city in Florida.
5
Government intervention is exactly why his country is a mess and he now has to flee.
5
Agreed.
5
Probably due to local buyers who got priced out of Istanbul.
5
They got it from Pol Pot.
4
@DKX365 There is no embargo on food or medication except the one by the Cuban government via import bans and high tariffs.
4
@degamispoudegamis With that reliance on oil due to Chavez destroying all the other industries by nationalization and price controls in the early 2010's rendering it unable to support itself. Plenty to do with socialism. The sanctions are of little consequence as Venezuela collapsed 3 years before any sanction was imposed. Cope.
4
While even more delusional people always blame the US for their failures and shortcomings.
4
Or Zimbabwe.
4
It's the Cuban government and its central planning model.
4
@azulmora9777 OH YES THEY DID as they had no problem voting for governments to rob the most intelligent and productive among them in the name of "social justice."
