But Spanish is not a majority language in any of those states.
2
Actually the Americans did.
2
UK: Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong Spain: Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, DR, Cuba
2
Actually 16-17% speak Spanish.
2
But Spain lost the Philippines to the US. And it barely had any Spaniard culture by that time.
2
@comrades Nguyen Only in overall GDP. But it's GDP per capita is less than $10K and a solid 40% of Mexicans are poor.
1
That's because the US has some 330M people while England has 66M.
1
California is majority-English.
1
But Jamaica is an English-speaking country just like that other one-time Spanish colony, Trinidad & Tobago.
1
They lost it to the US in the War.
1
Guam hardly has any Spanish-speakers and it's a US Territory.
1
Corrupt, (politically) dysfunctional, bureaucratic, etc.
1
Philippines hasn't been a US territory since 1946.
1
And dysfunctional.
1
Population-wise, it would be the biggest in the world.
1
Your freedom came more from the US letting you go than any fight against Spain.
1
Basically an oversized Soviet Union.
1
Guyana, French Guiana and Suriname are not similar to the rest of South America.
1
Hardly. Quebec has only 8M people to France's 67M.
1
Um. No. Spanish only make up 17% of the USA.
1
Especially in Latin America.
1
Louisiana was an ex-French colony.
1
@flavouredpeanut9007 And to top it off, none of them have a Spanish-majority population.
1
But they account for 17% of the total population.
1
No it's not.
1
But English is still the #1 spoken language.
1
And Guyana.
1
The USA as a whole is an English-speaking country even in parts that the Spaniards once owned. Haiti is an-ex-French colony. You mean the Dominican Republic. The Philippines hasn't been Spanish since the Spanish-American War. You're right about Guatemala, but Guatemala is yet another example of a lot of things wrong with Latin America and the failures of Spanish colonialism.
1
@sunforged1662 That's if you don't mind drug cartels and corrupt politics.
1
Ego and pride.
1
You mean the Americans did. They had the weapons and the manpower.
1
Out of a population of some 330 million.
1
Simple. 260 million English speakers in USA.
1
@MarioRodriguez-gr8wc Spanish speakers make up 17% of the US's population.
1
They're talking about whole countries. Not little parts of them. And Latinos make up 16% of the US's population.
1
But Latinos make up 16% of the US's population.
1
@Arroyoruiz That's not saying much when Spanish is not the dominant language even in those states and cities as Latinos are not the majority.
1
Latinos only make 17% of USA's population.
1
Much bigger, but much poorer and more unstable.
1
The US doesn't have 80 million Mexicans. And the SW US is not that big population-wise.
1
@albertocastellanovalderram3920 They just bred them out of existence.
1
An oversized China at best.
1
And the most dysfunctional of all Spanish-speaking countries.
1
Except Belize is an ex-British colony.
1
@ottokaare5925 So does France.
1
The US didn't invade the Philippines. The Philippines was the US's trophy prize for beating Spain in the Spanish-American War alongside Cuba and Puerto Rico.
1
New York never was Spanish. And you're letting NYC fool you.
1
Belize is an ex-British colony and was once called British Honduras.
1
Since when was Miami a country? Miami is a city in English-speaking Florida which a state of English-speaking USA.
1
Not really. It sounds about right as Afro-Latinos are restricted to Cuba, the DR and Equatorial Guinea.
1
Mestizo = half-European and half-Native Indian.
1
@thekashreview214 Regional wars.
1
Only Argentina and Brazil had Nazis.
1
Brazil speaks Portuguese.
1
@Centaurz23 Not even at the best of times.
1
They bred them out of existence. Hence, the mestizos.
1
So what becomes of Nicaragua, Bolivia and Cuba?
1
All of them are American states. And English is the dominant language in all of them.
1
Texas is a US state.
1
Louisiana was a French colony, not Spanish.
1
Yes it was. Spain was the OG colonizer alongside Portugal. And unlike the British who practiced segregation, the Spanish practed race-mixing hence the Mestizos.
1
Thanks to the United States.
1
Maduro. Then Ortega. Then Castro.
1
That's namely Latin America.
1
Max Smith Pretty much.
