Yes it does as socialism was the reason Venezuela no longer had a diversified economy. Chavez price-controlled and nationalized it out of existence in the process of depending entirely on oil to keep the country afloat and buy votes from the poor to ensure his re-election. He was just fortunate enough to die before SHTF which left Maduro to bear the brunt of his policies that resulted in what you're seeing now. Shortages of virtually everything including toilet paper, mass migrations, famine, hyper-inflation and going from the wealthiest country in South America to officially the poorest country in South America with the world's highest crime rate to boot.

@WarCrimeGaming And he paid off that IMF loan he took to build the presidential palace on the backs of his own citizens by letting them starve and freeze to death.
2
@WarCrimeGaming Vietnam and China only after adopting some capitalist reforms in the 80's. Laos is a Chinese client state. So North Korea and Cuba are the only pure socialist countries still in existence. North Korea surviving as a buffer between China and the US via South Korea propped up by China. And Cuba is surviving on US remittances and food aid, Canadian tourism, Venezuelan oil and renting out its doctors to other countries.

<because they dared to be different.> By adopting an idea that have consistently turned once-prosperous countries into hellholes like Zimbabwe, North Korea and Cuba?

He may not have actually ruined the country, but he definitely set the country up for failure as Maduro was left holding the bag.

Namely the Black and Latino communities situated there.

Exactly.

Exactly.
1
That's because Chavez destroyed whatever diversified economy Venezuela had on its way to being oil-dependent with price control and nationalization.

And his daughter is now the richest person in the country.

Exactly.

Not to mention more Black people were killed by police under Obama than any other President.

@olehsztul6177 <Well not really, economic sabotage did for oil monopoly by Saudi oil companies> Then how come none of the other oil-rich countries suffered as badly as Venezuela did?
1
No he didn't. He just simply threw money at the problem in exchange for votes.
1
Interestingly, Duterte is a leftist.
1
It didn't help that Chavez killed off whatever diversified economy Venezuela had with price control and nationalization in the process of becoming solely reliant on oil.
1
Chavez price-controlled and nationalized it out of existence along with killing off the middle class.
1
So how did Yugoslavia under Tito and Somalia under Barre manage to get US support?
1
@renegadeace1735 Especially Eastern Europe.
1
Yes it did. Sanctions are just a cop-out for the price controls and wholesale nationalizations and destruction of the middle class along with corruption, mismanagement and well-intentioned but short-sighted policies that did far more to put Venezuela in its current dismal state of affairs.
1
It's more about vote-buying than actually helping people as free money (really, money taken from the productive and efficient of society) and social programs are designed to keep people dependent.
1
Whatever, Chavista! <His economic diversification plan was unsuccessful due to American interference.> No. It was unsuccessful because of price controls and wholesale nationalizations of private business killing off the country's wealth-producers. <Venezuela's collapse is due to the oil coup by Obama and Saudi Arabia, in addition to economic embargoes.> How come none of the other oil-rich countries collapsed like Venezuela did despite suffering the same price-collapse?
1
@olehsztul6177 <Venezuela is a social democracy not a socialist country. Fact.> And a failed one at that. FACT!

Exactly.
