In other words, as Margaret Thatcher once said, it "ran out of other people's money."
1
Good riddance.
1
Vietnam is an ex-French colony but ditched French for English upon reforming the economy.
1
@paarmenion3635 <Well French Guiana is the wealthiest region of the entire sub-contient> Only because of French subsidies and the Euro being the local currency as it has little going for it besides that space shuttle-launching station.
1
@Freedmoon44 Quebec is not that rich. <while Louisiana can barely be considered french speaking anymore and is one of the worst states of the USA to be in due to New Orleans, its still relatively decent.> Because all of the French have long assimilated. Louisiana is the 2nd poorest state in the continental US.
1
@krips22 <Which former Spanish or British colony are doing great in Africa? (Yes, let's compare what is comparable; besides, South Africa is a very different case, for obvious reasons) > Botswana (ex-British colony). Equatorial Guinea (ex-Spanish colony) = highest GDP per capita in the continent but 75% of the population is poor and is a functional kleptocracy as the ruling Nguema family controls all of the country's wealth.
1
Equatorial Guinea may have one of the highest GDP's per capita in Africa, but 75% of the population is poor and is a functional kleptocracy.
1
The external factors just the final nail in the coffin. The internal facts did the most damage.
1
Just ask Ethiopia.
1
Exactly.
1
Good question.
1
That doesn't work. And Europe was plagued with conflicts despite the nations being ethnically homogeneous.
1
@rn6312 Like it is in diverse Ethiopia?
1
Not really. The Soviet system was corrupt beyond redemption to the point that the only way to reform it was destroy it altogether.
1
No. Your own dysfunction and mismanagement did you in.
1
They have separate autonomous cantons for themselves.
1
But it was PR disaster that exposed the USSR to the outside world and locals.
1
The supposed phobia is justified.
1
LOL. Gran Colombia was never really a threat as it was disorganized and all but already divided.
1
Especially without capitalism, foreign aid or tyranny.
1
Hardly.
1
@acacius9903 LOL. The Chinese are just doing to Africa what Europe already did just as Mao planned.
1
And why most of its former colonies are dysfunctional and enjoy limited prosperity.
1
Ego. And some still don't get along with each other due to past wars.
1
@radomirratkovic9014 There is no such thing as benevolent leaders.
1
You tankies sure love to give the USA more credit than warranted for the USSR's collapse.
1
That fake economy was never sustainable to begin with. Hence the US and Soviet aid.
1
Pretty much.
1
Exactly.
1
Nope.
1
UK got out of that business a long time ago. You mean France with its economic control over West Africa with the CFA franc.
1
@nomecreona3829 The USA is a former British colony. Try again!
1
It's Asia's Poland.
1
Because Donetsk is part of a country that want nothing to do with Russia.
1
In other words, Yugoslavia was personality cult.
1
@nicholasmaximus3412 Except "real" communism has been tried. In Somalia after its one-time Soviet-backed puppet got ousted.
1
@nicholasmaximus3412 Pretty much.
1
Ceausescu tried that in Romania only to hasten his own demise.
1
Fascism is an offspring of socialism.
1
Exactly.
1
Bolivar was right in his prediction that Latin America would be doomed as a dysfunctional mess.
1
@kerriwilson7732 Exactly.
1
@tajenoorkhan7217 But in terms of GDP per capita, Brazil is below the DR.
1
One problem, though. the USA is not among the top 50 in crime, but Brazil has the 7th highest crime rate in the world.
1
And then the economy started failing.
1
@Fabio Eduardo His own ego and power-lust did him in.
