Afghanistan is mountanous, difficult to invade and filled with tribes spread over many countries who support each other. Imagine an entire region supporting the enemy, would be difficult to defeat said enemy. Ukraine is mostly flat, easy to invade and maintain forces. Plus, it's Russia's backyard. Russia can do this forever, Ukraine and nato cannot.
