  1. Germany had all the cheap Russian gas for years, they didn't need to innovate. Everything ran smoothly. They are now buying Russian gas still, but from Turkey for a premium price. They can't compete anymore, because costs are too high. Had they innovated, it wouldn't had been this bad. But they didn't, and now Germany is done for.
