  1. Something I realised recently was that people in the West were shocked at how badly Russian troops are treated even as military events are celebrated. In the West serving in the military is regarded with some respect but in Russia they seem like third class and disposable despite the parades and military posturing. There is no real progression for soldiers unless they are part of the officer corps. It is ironic that in the ‘class ridden’ western armies someone can progress to the top and responsibility and command is given to noncommissioned soldiers whereas Russian NCOs are just there to enforce the orders from above and maintain discipline. Strange really considering the Russian military is descended from a socialist system. You would expect less of a separation between officers and men.

  2. Westerners have no grasp of the way Russia works. Thank you for explaining this archaic and exploitative system. It seems to cripple the development of Russian society and does not reward merit or talent and recognises only power. Frightening.
