  4. In the 1930s Big tobacco hired Edward Bernays to come up with a way to encourage women to smoke. Bernays turned smoking into a womens liberation issue with the "Torches of Liberty" campaign. It worked and women started smoking in large numbers. Similar is done today, look at the so called fat liberation movement that is 90% women and encourages obesity as a civil rights issue.
