Comments by "Nigel Johnson" (@nigeljohnson9820) on "Scotland will be 'ripped from Europe' without independence, says Nicola Sturgeon" video.
Independence? The right to pay the EU's membership fee, the right to give up your fish to EU factory trawlers, the right to be told how to run your economy, the right to be governed by unelected Eurocrats in Brussels. That is the SNP's idea of independence.

No it won't, it will be told what to do by Brussels. Scotland's laws will be made by the EU. The Scottish economy will be subject to EU control, particularly if it is forced to join the euro zone.

@austinlfc the EU has ruled all new members must join the euro zone as soon as they meet the entry conditions. I suppose that you expect the Scotland will be so poor after joining that it will not be allowed in. So what exactly is Scotland going to use as a currency? You can't use the pound and claim to be independent of the UK.

@bca-biciclindcuaxel7527 the rules were different when the UK joined and it negotiated an opt-out. The chances that Scotland will be allowed to join the EU are small. The chance that a bankrupt Scotland will be allowed into the euro zone at even smaller. But if Scotland shows any sign of recovery after leaving the UK, it will be forced to join the euro zone. Not sure what it will use as a currency in the mean time. Despite all the stories about Scots being mean and careful with money, I can't help thinking about RBS the almost broke the UK. Then there is the little matter of how poorly the SNP are currently running the Scottish economy, particularly when it receives more money than the rest of the UK per head of population, certainly more than England. I suppose that Scotland will get use to not having the free health care it currently enjoyed, once it becomes a member of the EU (if that ever happens). If will of course be expected to pay the EU membership fee and pay for its own defense, 2% of its budget I believe.

@taqiyasir8086 you are deluded if you think the EU is a union of equals, some are more equal than others. For no voice, the SNP certainly make a lot of noise in the UK parliament, to the point where the tiny population of Scotland is attempting to stop the larger population of England from leaving the EU. Effectively keeping England inside the EU against its will. Interesting that you are willing to reject the money you receive from England in favour of paying the EU. There is the little matter of the EU accepting Scotland as a member, something Spain may well veto.

Miguel Melchior what makes you think you can have a referendum once in the EU? If the UK is forced to return to the EU, Scotland will not be allowed a referendum, because of the precedence it sets for Catalonia.
1
Miguel Melchior don't know what you are laughing at, Spain has already said it would block the membership of an independent Scotland. Now that really is funny.
1
Miguel Melchior yes it did, and it really does not matter the difference between the status of Scotland and Catalonia, it is the perception that matters as you may yet discover.
1
Miguel Melchior the Spanish consul in Scotland said that and he was quickly fired from his job.
1
Miguel Melchior I did and there are just as many sayings pain would veto Scotland's membership.

@BrianLee-qw7vc I think that is very likely, but even if Spain does not veto Scotland's membership, it is unlikely that an independent Scotland will be sufficiently economically stable to pass the EU membership criteria, unless they fudge it like they did for Greece, but then Scotland's fate would be the same as Greece. Scots whole know that in the EU all member states are equal, just that some are a lot more equal than others. Even more so once the Eurocrats have forced through majority voting and done away with all the member state vetos.

@jasperedwards3341 don't you think we should declare a Brexit ceasefire over the Christmas and New year period?
1
@jasperedwards3341 those Roman invaders were very prescient, as they built Hadrian's Wall. Something we english are going to need to repair and bring back into full use. I knew that a ceasefire was too much to expect. I had my reservations including new year, as everyone knows that the Scots are inebriated beyond sensibility during that period, something that seems to extend into most of the year, given their irrational support for the SNP. Not so much a party, as a xenophobic mob with a very weak grasp on history.
