The Irish are listed going on borrowed time. What is it going to do if there is a no deal brexit. His ring of steel around the backstop looks more like soggy tissue in the event of a no deal brexit, as there will not be a backstop. Both the UK and the RoI have stated that they will not impose a hard border in Ireland, that leaves only the EU to do so. Since all of this is about protecting the integrity of the EU market, an open border in Ireland would be a disastrous for the EU, they will have to do something, the question is what?

@johnsrhorgan I really hope you are right, it will ensure a no deal brexit.

Declan Flanagan I am not in the business of providing you with personal information, needless to say your guesses as to why I have the free time to fight against the EU are completely sure if the mark. But that is expected of your posts. I have no real interest in Ireland, other than how it impacts on the UK's ability to leave the EU. I note that Ireland appears to be populated by more than its fair share of illogical trouble makers with a victim complex. I have noticed that you too have a lot of free time to comment on my posts, but I won't speculate on why that is. Your flag waving xenophobia suggests you may work as a sinn Fein publicist.

Declan Flanagan interesting that you have already subsumed your Irish identity into the EU. I wonder how long that will last when the EU starts making demands of the RoI. You really are dreaming if you think there will be a united Ireland in the near future, you will have to wait until the demographic changes and you out number the loyalists. Given the Catholic aversion to birth control, you may only have to wait a few decades.

@jackmulcahy6548 no you will be leaving as a divided ireland as it will be some while before NI is willing to unify, assuming that the EU does not close the article 50 exit. I sure the eurocrats would prefer the arrangement that Spain has with its regions, once in you cannot leave. Once the eu as its own military you may be forced to remain. The European project will see the end of the nation state, Ireland will just be one of the homogenous regions of the EU super state. Your government will have no more power than a local council.

@jackmulcahy6548 you are going to be a subservient colony of the EU, in fact you already are, and you may find the article 50 escape route closed. That will be fun to watch. NI is not going to rid itself of its loyalist population even when the Catholics form the majority. If it takes a few decades for this to happen, you may find the north unwilling to join the tyranny of the EU. If the North reunites with the South, it will have a not insignificant population of disaffected loyalists who may react violently to being forced to join their old enemy. In Ireland grudges last for centuries. It will be interesting watching the loyalists fighting for their independence from Ireland and maybe the EU. Seems like what goes around comes around.

@mcr1jp The main purpose of the GFA was to ensure peace in Ireland, yet the IRA and exploding bombs and commuting murders. I really don't think we can trust the Irish to honour the peace or put their weapons beyond reach.
