  1. Tariffs are a very blunt weapon, that damages those that impose them. Far better to use product regulation and standards to keep poor quality products out of the home market. This is ehere small nations have an advantage, as the larger states find it uneconomical to meet a raft of different product standards in smaller markets. Home manufactures only need to meet two standards, that of the big markets and the local standards. Consumers win by having better quality products.
