Drom Assault after covid 19, the world is bankrupt. Strictly speaking it has been bankrupt for a long time, the virus has just made it obvious. When I wrote that I thought Italy was bankrupt, a number of Italians replied to say that I was wrong. Italians have capital, it is the Italian government that is short of cash and the country is run down with crumbling infrastructure. It was the EU that stopped the Italy government from borrowing to fix these problems. The EU bullied the Italian government to set a budget with which it approved.
The number of existential threats to the EU are growing, migration, growing nationalism with a rejection of globalisation, climate change, the black hole in the eu budget, a banking system sitting on a mountain of debt from the last financial crisis, and Brexit. Add to all the above the economic effects of Covid-19, and the survival of the EU looks in doubt. One of the reasons is that the EU really does not add much to finding a solution to the above list. The EU is a redundant management structure that could simply replaced by constructive international cooperation. Look at the way states in the US have been forced to act independently, because of the hopeless, self serving federal administration. This is a portent of the future for a federal Europe.
