These resources should be left underground. The med risks being destroyed by polution. The global climate can do without a further injection of CO2 from the burning of this gas reserve and there is a good chance of a war between Greece and Turkey. It is all bad news with no real upside. Russia is not going to come to Turkey's aid, it is not in Russian interest to under cut the market for its own energy. The eu would very much like access to agas energy supply coming from a member state like Greece, so Turkey will not get any support from the EU.

@elizabethtd1006 I am English, now outside the EU, so I do not care if the EU coverts the gas fields. The EU would very much like to be independent of Russian energy. Greece would like the windfall of cash that will come from exploiting the gas, so Turkey can expect a fight from the EU over access to the gas. This is about money, so war is a real possibility. I firmly believe in manmade climate change, and think the gas would be better in the ground if the planet is to continue to sustain life, but this is about money so it won't. It is not in Russian interests to undercut its own gas industry, so if Russia sides with Turkey, against Greece and the EU, Russia will exact a price from Turkey. At a guess a large share of the exploration rights.

@elizabethtd1006 I cannot find the reply you reference. I am surprised you agree with me give your first reply,or maybe you were just being sarcastic, It is often difficult to tell. I am just interested in the power play between russia and the eu. I am concerned about the potential for environmental damage. Turkey has shown itself to be no ones friend, its relationships with others is duplicitous at best. It was not so long ago when it was shooting down russian fighter aircraft on its border with Syria. Shortly after it buys air defence systems from Russia. Strategically, I think its long term ambition is to replace Saudi Arabia as a more moderate leader of the Islamic world. It is certainly moving away for secularism towards Islam, to further its goal. Gaining control of a major energy reserve would be a step in the direction of modeling itself on Saudi Arabia.
