Happy Traveler where are you getting your news? Wishful thinking dot com or fossil fuels billionaires for president? The Arctic circle has reached 31C in the last few days. Ice melts at just above 0C, you do the maths.

Happy Traveler there are two topics under discussion the change in the total mass of the Arctic ice cap and the veracity of news reports that the temperature recorded within the Arctic cycle had reached 32C. I contend that the ice cap is indeed shrinking and the news report about the recent temperature is indeed true for a small town in Norway. I am convinced that man made global warming is a fact, and even if part of the warming is part of a natural cycle, the science is indisputable that man made green house gas emissions will make any warming much worse. The human race would be made to add to the stresses on such a nonlinear system if they want to survive. I am also a firm believer in the Gaia principle, as proposed by James Lovelock, of treating the earth's environment as a nonlinear feed back system, will multiple control loops controlling global temperature. I also believe that this feedback obeys the rules of catastrophe theory and therefore can relatively rapidly switch states if the overall feedback becomes positive and will oscillate wildly as the gain and phase margins of the system are eroded.

Happy Traveler I suppose it is possible the news channels have reported Fahrenheit for Celsius, but this seems unlikely as the temperature in Salvbard was 10C today and that is well into the Arctic Circle. Temperature in Norilsk today was 17C at its peak, well short of the 32C reported by Euronews, but still very high.

Jetpack Rorschach I rechecked the Euronews story. The place recording these temperatures is a town in Norway which is above the Arctic Circle.
