@cyberfunk3793 the first part of the 21st century can be labeled as "revenge of the dictators". The world is filling up with these selfserving people. We have China, Russia, Belarus, Brazil and Miramar, to name but a few. I could include a number of middle Eastern states. They all conform to the stereotype established in George Orwell's novels, 1984 and animal farm. Unfortunately revolutions just seem to replace one dictator with another. They all consolidate their power with oppression of any opposition. They all seem to think they are entitled to enrich themselves at th expense of their people and the planet's environment. The worst are the empire builders.

So Russia wants NATO to pull back, to allow Russia a free hand in the invasion of Ukraine. The russians say they do not want NATO to place intermediate range nuclear tipped missiles within a few minutes flight time of Moscow, however the new russian hypersonic missiles can make such flight times, in the reverse direction, possible from a much longer range, so this is Putin seeking to gain a strategic advantage. Let's consider who is the aggressor. There is no chance that NATO has any intention of invading russian territory, while it is clear that Putin is intent on invading Russia's neighbouring independent States, with a view of rebuilding the former USSR. The gas crisis in Europe is an attempt to force the EU to bring on line the Nor stream 2 gas pipeline, if the EU agrees, it will make it very difficult for the EU to resist any Russian invasion. No doubt any attack will be timed to coincide with the coldest part of the European winter. That way Russia can maximise the effect of useing the gas supply as a weapon.

@robertliang3529 I lived through the sixties and severties, when the USSR was targeting the UK, US and most of Europe with nuclear missile. As I said, it is not NATO that is the aggressor, there is absolutely no chance of a NATO invasion of Russia, so it is difficult to see what Putin is afraid of, apart from NATO stopping his plans to expand russian territory. Putin has openly stated that he wants to rebuild the old USSR, to that end he has moved his forces to the Ukraine border. I doubt if NATO cares much about the Ukraine, it is simply a matter of stopping russian expansion. Putin has taken tips from Hitler's PlayBook. Invasion, being justified by oppressed russian minority aided by irregular Russian forces. This is how Hitler justified the invasion of the Sudetenland at the start of WWII.
