The customer is always right. It is up to the Australians to decide what it needs for its defence. It is worth asking why the Australians ordered a non nuclear powered submarine in the first place. The purpose of a weapon is to provide a credible defence, it could be argued that a non nuclear submarine does not do that. Thus the order for the French submarines was more about style than substance, to give the appearance of a defence force on the cheap. There is no doubt that the French will attempt to take advantage of this setback to further its goal of leading the EU military defence force. They clearly intend to be its largest weapons supplier. If this deal, encourages the eu to establish its own military, then the french may actually benefit from the Australian decision not to buy obsolete french submarines.
